I once participated in a collaborative consortium project entitled broadening the food base. The project was initiated and funded to address the huge pressure on the agricultural industry in Southern Africa to avert growing food insecurity. During the $650000 research project which lasted for three years, value chains for five underutilized crops namely Bambara groundnut, cowpea, amaranthus, cactus pear and amadumbe were developed. As I reflect on the fact that these crops are extremely drought tolerant and amaranthus for example does well on a total of 10 inches (25 cm) of water or less, I am reminded that as believers, we can flourish whatever the condition. Because we place our confidence in God, we can flourish like the branches connected to a true sprouting Vine. We can be upright, strong, and unmoved by the winds of change. We can have abundant strength, not only for our own needs, but even for the needs of others. As we go into the new year in an age of uncertainty and upheaval, lets remind ourselves that we have an unchanging and omnipotent God who is in total control of the events in our world. Fear and anxiety should not hold us back or overcome us. Failure or disappointment should not define us. Instead, let’s keep dreaming big, praying big, believing big, expecting big, working smart, serving God and building His Kingdom by helping others.
Do have a flourishing year ahead
