President Jacob Zuma will be in Nigeria on Tuesday and Wednesday on a state visit during which he is expected to iron out differences on issues relating to the treatment of South African companies. According to Thanduxolo Jika, “Local companies have had major problems in Nigeria, with MTN being fined billions for contravening telecommunications regulations.” Also according to the Editor of Sunday Times, Ron Derby, the visit ‘is a chance to mend relations, the deterioration of which is best exemplified by the crippling fine handed to MTN by Nigeria’s regulatory authority.’
Apart from MTN, several South African companies, such as Truworths, have had to either leave or consider exiting their Nigerian operations e.g Milk producer Clover is re-evaluating its investment.
Ron also said that he doubts whether it will ever be possible to recreate the relations experienced between Olusegun Obasanjo and Thabo Mbeki however he wishes Zuma visit will be improvement on the relations between Zuma and Goodluck Jonathan.
