I know many people who once invested on the stock market but have now made up their mind never do it again because of market turbulence or gyration. They lost interest and decided not to go near equity investing because they were not prepared for disruptions. Life is like investing in equities.

You triumph when you understand that you need to adapt and have a strategy for the boom and bear seasons. This understanding will enable you to recover from shocks and stresses, grow from a disruptive experience and achieve revitalization.

Instead of becoming shy or reticent after an unpleasant experience, we can be smart and refuse to be scared. To be ‘smart’ means, we are wiser, courageous and unshakable. Living this way is not for the faint hearted but for tough minded people.

Judith Rodin tried to disseminate this idea in her book, The Resilience Dividend, managing disruption, avoiding disaster and growing stronger in an unpredictable world. She discussed the relevance of resilience for an individual, community or organization especially in a world with three distinctly modern phenomena – urbanization, climate change and globalization.

As Christians also, we should be smart because we are part of an unshakable Kingdom. “Whatever happens here, our future is built on a solid foundation that cannot be destroyed.”  So, dream lofty dreams. Take risks. If you fail, learn from the experience and try again. Be smart!

“If you wish success in life, make perseverance your bosom friend.”   Joseph Addison
