I believe there are two books – the Bible and others. The whole Bible is special because it is God’s inspired Word that enables us to know how to be saved. It is also our source of guidance for how we should live. Through the Bible, God shows us how to live a life of significance and purpose. We must therefore read it and apply it to our lives. How much time do you spend reading God’s Word? Many years ago,
I read of Catherine Booth that read the Bible through eight times before the age 12. She and her husband, William later founded Salvation Army. And recently, I came across late Dr Martyn Lloyd-Jones writings on the Christian life. Late Dr Martyn a Welsh Protestant minister and medical doctor who was influential in the Reformed wing of the British evangelical movement in the 20th century once said without mincing words “I think any Christian should be ashamed who does not go through the entire Bible once a year.” Dr Martyn was ‘hard’ there. Before reading Dr Martyn statement and after knowing about Catherine’s love for the Word, I had read the whole Bible about 4 times.
The first time, I followed a plan of reading 3 chapters Mondays to Fridays and five chapters on weekends. However, after reading the Bible three times consequently, it just dawned on me that I should spend more time in the New Testament compared to the Old Testament. I believe while not disrespecting the Old Testament, the new covenant is far more superior because Christ is the fulfillment of the Old.
So from last year, I made up my mind that I will make sure I read the New Testament at least twice in a year and the Old Testament once in Two years. That is my plan now. Every Christian should develop his or her own plan for reading the whole Bible because it is important to spend the majority of our time feeding on the truth of God’s Word.
“Our knowledge of God’s Word is not useful unless it strengthens our faith and leads us to do good.” LASB
