Last Friday, we had the privilege of joining an esteemed elder from our church for a delightful dinner at their charming home. Upon settling into their tastefully decorated living room, my gaze was captivated by a touching picture featuring Jim Elliot’s renowned quote: “He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose.” Reflecting on Jim Elliot’s sacrificial dedication to spreading the gospel to the unreached, I couldn’t help but marvel at the profound impact of such commitment.
Following the delicious main course, our host, Jim, shared a thought-provoking devotional that encapsulated the significance of wholeheartedly following God. His words resonated, assuring us that those who embrace this path will ultimately find fulfillment and wisdom in their life choices. As we indulged in dessert, the evening took a lighthearted turn with a spirited game of UNO, guided by Jim and his wife. To our delight, my wife emerged as the triumphant victor, adding an extra layer of joy to an already remarkable night.
The wisdom gleaned from this couple, celebrating over 50 years of marriage, was invaluable. Their simple yet profound lesson extended beyond the dinner table – a call to regularly extend invitations to others, whether to your home or a restaurant, with the intent of being a source of blessing. In doing so, they imparted the timeless truth that in giving, one often finds unexpected blessings in return.
