Laughing gas canisters, one of the most widely used recreational drugs among young people in the UK, are rising in popularity and getting bigger. Sadly, this has resulted in an epidemic of nitric oxide induced spinal cord and nerve damage. If this trend continues, we can expect to see many paralyzed young people from laughing gas cannisters. Probably, these young people know the risk involved with their habit but they are helpless because they have become addicted to it. We too may find ourselves addicted to other edibles including junk food or unhealthy food which also have negative consequences. That’s why it is important to watch what we drink or ingest, because we will certainly become drunk or addicted to them. Rather we should eat or drink what will not harm us. For example, we can get used to drinking a lot of water, eating a lot of vegetable, practicing intermittent fasting or regular exercise. Over and above all these, we can choose to be drunk in the Spirit i.e., to be filled in the Holy Spirit. John Piper writes “Drinking the Spirit means setting our minds on the things of the Spirit. And setting our minds on the things of the Spirit means directing our eager attention to the teachings of the apostles about God and to the words of Jesus. If we do this long enough, we will get drunk with the Spirit.” What is your strategy to only be ‘drunk’ with what will benefit you?
