Christians and climate change

Christians and climate change

I usually receive Bill Gates emails (Gates Notes. The Insider Edition). In his last email, he shared about the importance of developing clean energy tools and solutions needed to get to zero-emission. He also shared about the new initiative (Breakthrough Energy) him and his team are working on. According to him, Breakthrough Energy is working to support new technologies that will change the way we live, eat, work, travel, and make things so we can avoid the most devastating impacts of climate change. After reading his impressive idea, it occurred to me to find out what majority of Christians think about climate change. During my search, I found that many practicing U.S Christians do not believe that human activities are warming the Earth although they hold diverse views about the environment. However, it will be interesting to know if the views of Christians in other countries differ from U.S Christians. If you are reading this and you are a Christian, what is your view on climate change?… Personally I am of the opinion that humans are the major cause of global warming and we should be concerned about its impact(s) because it will strike hardest against the poor and the vulnerable. We therefore, have a responsibility to put effort into caring for our planet and reducing our ecological food print. At the same time, we cannot believe in a climate apocalypse – ‘a hypothetical scenario involving the global collapse of human civilization and potential human extinction as either a direct or indirect result of anthropogenic climate change.’ God is in control of our planet and He only will dissolve it and make a new one.

“Climate change is an issue that impels us to think about God’s justice and how we are to echo it in our world.” Archbishop of Canterbury, Rowan Williams

“The gravity of the ecological situation reveals how deep is the human moral crisis.” Pope John Paul II
