Find time to read the *conversation between myself and a Christian brother struggling against a besetting sin. Richard (not his real name) contacted me on a social media platform not too long ago.
Richard: Hi sir, I hope you are well and your family. I would like to ask you for some advice and viewpoints as a Christian. Please kindly give me a reply back if you’re willing to respond sir.
Tosin: Hi Brother. We are well. Glory to God. Trust you are doing great as well.
Richard: Thank you very much for the response sir and glory to God that you are all well. I would like to ask you as a born again Christian, are there any sins you still struggle with or fall back into even as a born again? How do you deal with them? I fell back into sin I’ve stopped doing for around 6 months and I feel so disappointed in myself because I feel like my love for God isn’t strong enough to resist doing them completely. I struggle with lust and sexual urges/temptations and I do pray and read my bible but I’ve not been able to put them to death. How do I deal with this practically please?
Tosin: Glad that you were able to share your struggle with me. I have also struggled before. It is possible for us to fall into sin after we have given our lives to Christ. However, the will of God for us is to live an overcoming life. A life of victory over sin. If you sin, go to Christ and tell Him you are sorry and ask Him to forgive you. Make up your mind not to commit the sin again. Also, it is important to be wise.
For example, you need to avoid situations or places or even people that make you to be tempted. Guide your heart with all diligence and watch your thoughts because they become your actions. Spend time reading the Bible and pray more. Also, keep confessing that you are an overcomer. I love this Scripture: The Word of God have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee. And, Jesus said, this: You are cleansed through the words I have spoken unto you. Give yourself to the word of God. Also, pray and fast, asking God to give you victory. Fasting helps us to develop self-control. Will also pray along with you. Please be free to ask me any other question.
Richard: Sir I honestly appreciate your time and care to write this response to me, thank you very much. I’ve disciplined myself to not watch anything that will cause me to fall or tempt me but I’ve been weak in dealing with lustful thoughts, sexual sins and sexual urges. I’ve done what was necessary by avoiding any traps but in the end I still fell after 6 months of avoiding/fighting with it.
I’m truly disappointed but I will ask for forgiveness and pick myself back up. It’s such a struggle for me. I pray and I read the word but lust and sexual urges are never absent from me and it’s very frustrating. I need help in this area a lot. Please pray for me sir because the urges have come back to me and I’m still struggling with it. I’m so unhappy about this.
Tosin: You are welcome. Don’t give up. Keep meditating on the Word of God and confessing that you are the righteousness of God in Christ. You can overcome it but you must surrender your will to Christ. Also, tell yourself that your joy and making Christ happy is more important than a pleasure of sin for a moment. When you say No, now, it will be easier to say No next time.
Richard: Amen sir, making Christ happy is more important than a pleasure of sin for a moment. I will certainly confess that I’m the righteousness of God in Christ. I must keep on meditating. I appreciate all the help sir.
Tosin: You are welcome Brother. Do have a pleasant week ahead. Blessings.
“Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.” Scripture
