Stepping Out in Faith: Embracing Risk and Trusting God’s Plan

Stepping Out in Faith: Embracing Risk and Trusting God’s Plan

When was the last time you stepped out in faith, even when it felt risky?

A few days ago, I received an email from Jim Daly, President of Focus on the Family, that began with this very question. He went on to share the story of Jesus walking on water and Peter’s bold decision to step out of the boat to meet Him. Although Peter wavered and began to sink, he dared to take those initial steps—something the other 11 disciples, who stayed safely in the boat, did not do. They missed out on an extraordinary moment because they chose safety over faith.

Reflecting on my own experience, the last time I stepped out in faith, even when it felt risky, was when I resigned from my job in South Africa before securing employment in the United States. At the time, I had only started my small business in the US and was venturing into the unknown. But now, looking back, I can only say, “Thank you, God.” He has opened doors I could never have foreseen and blessed me in ways beyond my expectations. In addition, I continue to serve remotely as an Honorary Research Professor in South Africa. While my compensation comes in forms other than a salary, new opportunities have arisen that allow me to make an even greater impact.

Stepping out in faith often means releasing what we know and embracing the unknown, trusting that God’s plan is far greater than anything we can imagine. It’s about surrendering control and believing that, even in uncertainty, He is working for our good.

So, I’ll ask again: when was the last time you stepped out in faith, even when it felt risky?

Before stepping out in faith, it’s important to follow these key steps:

  1. Discern God’s Will: Start by determining if what you’re about to do aligns with God’s will. Pray for clarity and seek His guidance in making sure this is the path He wants you to take.
  2. Consider the Timing: Next, assess whether it is the right time to act. Timing is crucial, and even the right decisions can have different outcomes depending on when they are made.
  3. Evaluate the Cost and Benefits: Think carefully about what you’re about to embark on. Weigh the risks, potential gains, and challenges. If your decision involves something significant, like immigration, it’s often wise to visit the country first and gather firsthand insight.

Throughout this process, from the initial step to the moment you act, keep committing your way to God in prayer, trusting Him to guide your every step.
